In the middle of the electoral race for the presidential seat of Bolivia, the interim president Jeanine Áñez surprisingly, he declined his candidacy for the October 18 elections on Thursday.
Almost a month before the elections, the president explained in a message to the nation that she made the decision “to guarantee that there is a winner who defends democracy and thus does not return to govern the party of the former president Evo Morales.
“What is at stake is not a small thing; it is democracy in Bolivia… It is not a sacrifice, it is an honor. I do it to help victory for those of us who do not want the dictatorship to return ”, he added.
Shortly afterwards, he called for the unity of the candidates to defeat the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), the party of Morales, who resigned from power in 2019 after unsuccessful elections classified as fraudulent and who is currently a refugee in Argentina.
Áñez it fell from third to fourth place with 10% of the vote preference, according to a recent survey by the Fundación Jubileo, associated with the state Universidad Mayor de San Andrés, among others.
The poll gave the first place to the candidate of the MAS and former Minister of Economy, Luis Arce, who obtained 40% followed by former President Carlos Mesa with 26.2%. In third place is the former civic leader, Luis Fernando Camacho, with 14.4%.
The survey was conducted on 15,979 people in person and online between August 7 and September 15 with a margin of error of 0.78 to 1.62 percentage points.
If in the elections the results reflected the preferences of the polls, there would be no second round.
