This Monday, the Senate Environment Commission met to know the Government’s position in relation to the decision not to sign the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and The Caribbean, known as the “Escazú Agreement”.
For this, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrés Allamand and the Minister of the Environment, Carolina Schmidt were invited. However, both authorities did not attend the commission.
The director of the Center for Environmental Law at the University of Chile, Valentina Durán, and the doctor in International Law, Paulina Astroza, did attend.
Both professionals indicated the arguments they consider important to sign or not the agreement. They also clarified that the treaty does not put the sovereignty of the country at risk.
In fact, Astroza stated that there are no reasons to delay the signing of the agreement. And if it is not done, the image of the country will be damaged. Therefore, it is incomprehensible to her that, to date, Chile does not have a legal report on International Law on the Escazú Agreement.
“I regret the absence of ministers who could have deepened reasons that we still do not understand. For the next one,” Durán said through his Twitter account.
“I am sorry that both Minister Allamand and Minister Schmidt were unable to attend at the last minute,” added Astroza.
