After the series of tremors that have recently been registered in the north of the country, the director of the National Seismological Center, Sergio BarrientosHe specified that there is another area that has been accumulating energy for a long time and that an earthquake is predictable within the next few years. The earthquake of great magnitude would be “Between Los Vilos and Pichilemu”, he warns.

As he explained to Radio Cooperativa, seismic lagoons, a phenomenon that “It corresponds to a place where one knows that earthquakes have occurred in the past and frequently in history it has been repeated several times, and no major earthquakes have occurred in a long time.”

He also indicated that there is a 6.5-centimeter convergence that accumulates each year by the Nazca Plate under the South American and that, over time, “They get stuck and time passes and these centimeters each year continue to accumulate and are released in a single earthquake every 100, 120, 150 years in a region.”

“One could expect the equivalent of that displacement of the plates of several meters, in 100 years it corresponds to 6.5 meters, then each of those 6.5 meters corresponds to an earthquake of the order of 8 or higher”he added.

In relation to this point, he said that “There are certain places in Chile where earthquakes have not occurred in a long time, more than 100 years ago, that is why one classifies it as a seismic lagoon”, which would be the central area of the country.

“This area is also accumulating and the more time passes, the more energy will accumulate, but I would say that the place where the future earthquake will occur is limited, perhaps in more years, which is limited by Pichilemu to the south and Los Vilos to the north “, he emphasized.
