This day commemorates the International Day for Suicide Prevention and a study revealed that one out of every two Chileans has ever thought of taking their own life.
The Network of Suicide Prevention Teams (REPS) and the research agency Datos Claros carried out a survey 2,000 people on suicidal behaviors before and during the health crisis caused by Covid-19, the most affected segments being the elderly and young adults.
The study revealed that one in two Chileans has ever thought about taking their own life, and that one in five has attempted suicide, and that of those who tried, one in two did not seek help, mainly, by the fear to admit it or to tell it.
Of those who ever thought of committing suicide, a 66 percent were young people between 18 to 29 years old, and 88 percent thought how to do it.
While of those who had a suicide attempt, mostly older adults 60 years old, with 42.7 percent, and 57 percent did not do it because someone or something stopped them.
In the context of a pandemic, among those who have thought about committing suicide, those who present the most suicide attempts are people over 60 years of age, with 47.1 percent, of whom segment that is the least seeking help.
