In a new balance due to the pandemic, the health authority reported this Thursday the death of nine other people due to Covid-19 in the Coquimbo Region.

They are four people from the commune of La Serena, two from Coquimbo, one from Paihuano, another from Illapel and one from Ovalle.

With them, the total number of deaths from coronavirus reaches 168 throughout the region.

The Ministry of Health, Alejandro García, indicated that the figure is “a new call for attention”, since despite the decline in new and active cases reported in recent days, “we continue to have a large number of patients hospitalized and connected to mechanic ventilation”.

To date, 126 people are admitted to hospitals in the region and of these there are 31 in serious condition and connected to mechanical ventilation.

“The virus is still present and threatens us constantly, that is why the call is to extreme preventive measures, mainly in the coming days, with the arrival of the National Holidays”, added García.

New cases

In relation to new infections, the authority reported 78 cases of positive Covid-19 this Thursday, which brings the accumulated figure to 10,792 since the start of the pandemic.

In detail, the patients correspond to the communes of Ovalle (31), Coquimbo (20), La Serena (14), Monte Patria (04), Andacollo (02), Salamanca (02), Combarbalá (02), Los Vilos ( 01) and Rio Hurtado (01). They are joined by a person who declared residence in another region of the country.

There are 952 active cases in the region, remaining for the third consecutive day under the 1,000 barrier.

Youth appeal

The Seremi García explained that the highest rate of infection in the region is in the age range of 25 to 40 years, so he called on the young population to become aware and take extreme measures, to protect the adults around them.

Along the same lines, he explained that 80% of the people who have died from the virus in the region correspond to adults over 60 years of age.

“We strongly urge young people to take care of themselves. They are not immune to the virus and should take all self-care measures when they go to their places of work, when they do their shopping and also at home. We do not want to deliver more regrettable news “he added.
