The mayor of Providencia, Evelyn matthei, together with a group of Venezuelan citizens, came to the Embassy of Venezuela in Chile with the intention of delivering a letter for said government to accept the return of his compatriots.
With the start of the pandemicHundreds of Venezuelans gathered outside the diplomatic legation located on Calle Bustos in Providencia to ask to return to their country, a situation that was repeated with people of different nationalities.
The economic crisis Derived from the arrival of the covid-19, the income of migrants in the country decreased, so many had to leave their homes and waited for their government’s efforts to return.
As this has not happened, the Venezuelans have had to be referred to Providencia schools so that they did not spend the night on the street, like the Liceo 7 and the Liceo Lastarria.
However, the constituent plebiscite and said establishments must be occupied as voting precincts. Therefore, Matthei went to the embassy to request that migrants can return to their country as they have been asking for months.
“There are 220, they have been 3 and a half months in our high schools, we have taken care of them (…) There is a plane that can leave, is funded by Chile, not Venezuela. The only thing we ask of the Venezuelan government is that they actually let the plane land there, ”he told Radio Bío Bío.
But, he added that there is no dialogue with the Venezuelan authorities.
Matthei finally declared that, in case the return does not take place, they will have to evacuate Venezuelans to other places. “That is my anguish (…) We have done everything possible (for his return),” he said.
