BancoEstado had moved on Monday, since the threats to computer security detected over the weekend forced the bank to close its branches after acknowledging that it had presented problems in its operating systems due to the detection of “malicious software”.
He president of the entity, Sebastián Sichel, called for calm through his Twitter account, assuring that “there is no affectation of funds and little by little we will open branches”, so they have been focused “on protecting our operations and our clients from this attack by third parties” .
However, the controversy is far from over. In fact, the instruction within the bank to its workers –both for those who are present as well as remotely– is not to enter the bank’s system, and to keep the computers off.
During this day, the Government confirmed the computer attack, ensuring that an investigation is already underway, as confirmed by the Undersecretary of the Interior, Juan Francisco Galli.
“The complaint was made by the entity itself to Cybercrime in the PDI and that investigation is already underway. What needs to be determined is what is the nature of the crime. malware, what could have been its origin and once there the legal actions will be evaluated ”, he indicated during this day.
“What was done was a first contact with the affected entity and alerting the entire public system of the presence of this threat, so that preventive measures could be taken and thus avoid further damage,” Galli said.
“What there is is an early warning against the detection of this malware at BancoEstado, ”he added, explaining that“ what is done is to generate cybersecurity alerts so that the entire public sector, and especially –through the Financial Market Commission– the financial sector take preventive measures to prevent other entities are affected by this same threat ”.
For his part, Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Víctor Pérez, He said that “this should be a matter of special concern for all of us, what it had was a very deep cyber attack, through a virus that has penetrated the operational issue. And that makes us have to work with great tranquility not to reopen the branches so that there are no transfers ”.
Complaint against the “responsible”
Along with calling for calm, Sichel reported that they filed a complaint after suffering a cyber attack last Saturday, which is being investigated by the Cybercrime Brigade of the Investigative Police together with the Central North Prosecutor’s Office.
“I want to assure you that we are already applying all the legal measures, we have the complaint ready, because we are going to persecute these criminals until the end,” said the bank’s prosecutor, Isabel Margarita Cabello.
“This prosecutor’s office has a very clear purpose, which is to take care of the bank and take care of all Chileans, the complaint for computer sabotage is ready and we are going to accompany the Public Ministry in the investigation,” he added.
“We are going to do everything in our power to discover who is behind it and provide assurance that this bank is always there for Chileans, the most important thing is to take care of customers,” he concluded.
“We are not going to rest until we find those responsible, these are gangs,” Sichel said.
Research “in situ” of the CMF
Although this Monday all the parties reacted to this cyber attack, BancoEstado detected this violation in the system over the weekend.
Once it was known, the Commission for the Financial Market (CMF) was installed in the dependencies of the state bank to closely monitor the entire process, in a supervision in the place.
This, because the bank informed the CMF about the attack, as established in the protocol, and in turn, the CMF alerted the bank.
