In the Committee on Women and Gender Equality of the Chamber, the general director of the Carabineros, Mario Rozas, assured that the institution supported Norma Vásquez in all processes, a police officer who was allegedly murdered by her ex-partner, Gary Valenzuela, a second lieutenant who was discharged months earlier, in July, for a complaint of sexual abuse filed by the victim.

The highest authority of the uniformed police indicated that when they learned of the young woman’s accusation, the containment network was automatically activated, presenting the case to the Public Ministry.

The words of Rozas generated annoyance in the parliamentarians of the commission, who accused a cavalier attitude on the part of Rozas, since he did not elaborate on the matter.

The deputy of the PPD, Loreto Carvajal, pointed out that the attitude of the general director was worrying, considering that the murder of Norma Vásquez occurred within her own institution.

For her part, the RN deputy, Ximena Ossandón, affirmed that it is necessary to understand the situation that women who have been violated are going through.

Director General Mario Rozas added that work is being done to strengthen prevention and mechanisms to detect this type of violence in time.

Regarding the figures, it was noted that in 2018 there were 23 internal complaints of sexual harassment in the Carabineros, 16 in 2019 and 7 in 2020. There are 11 complaints for workplace harassment and 55 for domestic violence.
