Thousands of people again demonstrated in the streets this Sunday in different cities of Belarus to demand the resignation of the president, Alexandr Lukashenko, in the framework of the largest post-election protests in the history of the former Soviet republic.

The main anti-government protest, as on other occasions, was held in the capital, Minsk, where the opposition march was held amid strong security measures.

Protesters continue to take to the streets claiming that the presidential elections were fraudulent.

Meanwhile, the Belarusian Police also reinforced security in Minsk, where the opposition plans to hold a new protest this afternoon against the Government of Alexandr Lukashenko, which last Sunday brought together more than 100,000 attendees.

“To guarantee security, the number of police and military has been increased,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement, where it also reported the adoption of other “additional” measures to not allow “illegal actions by the protesters.”

The central Independence Square of Minsk was also cordoned off and the underpasses leading to the place were closed, according to the portal Tut.by.
