The United States Tennis Association (USTA, in English) offered this Sunday a statement in which it announced the sanction of Serbian Novak Djokovic, first seed, with the loss of all points and cash earned at the US Open after being disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Djokovic hit a ball, after having lost the serve against the Spanish Pablo Carreño during the first set of the round of 16 match, and it hit the neck of a linesman who fell to her knees.
After a conversation with the tournament judges, it was determined the disqualification of Djokovic, when the scoreboard indicated a 6-5 favorable to Carreño, which made the world number one lost the unbeaten 26-0 he had this season.
Following the disqualification, the USTA released the statement in which it states that “in accordance with the Grand Slam regulations, following his actions of intentionally hitting a ball in a dangerous or reckless manner on the court or hitting a ball without having consider the consequences, the referee of the US Open tournament ruled that Novak Djokovic should not continue at the 2020 US Open“.
The same statement also announced that “Due to the violation of the regulations, Djokovic will lose all the qualification points obtained in the US Open and will be fined with the prize money won in the tournament, in addition to any or all fines imposed with respect to the criminal incident. “
