What happened?

In two more weeks, the University of Chile will start on volunteer recruitment for clinical trials of a coronavirus vaccine in the country.

The immunization to be tested corresponds to the one developed by the Belgian company Janssen, pharmaceutical division of the American multinational company Johnson and Johnson.

Search for volunteers

In the recruitment of volunteers, there will be the collaboration of different healthcare centers of the Metropolitan region.

Two of these enclosures are Cesfam of the commune of Hill, another is the Exequiel González Cortés de San Miguel Hospital and finally there is the Cesfam Joan Alsina de San Bernardo.

The doctor Miguel O’Ryan, an infectious disease specialist from the University of Chile, explained that the San Miguel hospital intends to recruit health officials as volunteers, while in San Bernardo, in addition to Cesfam personnel, they also seek to recruit workers from a company close.

At least 1,000 volunteers

“In this last site we intend to invite, in addition to health personnel, to volunteers from a food-producing company that is in the area and has more than 4,000 workers“, O’Ryan explained.

According to the expert’s estimates, they hope to enroll at least 300 volunteers in Colina, 300 in the Exequiel González Cortés Hospital and another 400 in San Bernardo.

Study conditions

Those who collaborate in the tests must be over 18 years and they will be in the project for two years. Volunteers can receive both the vaccine and a placebo at random.

During the two-year period, the research team will keep in contact with the participants to verify their health status, especially if they develop the coronavirus. In addition, blood samples will be taken to analyze the effect of the vaccine on the immune system of the people.
