The Department of Statistics and Health Information (DEIS) of the Minsal estimated at 15,823 deaths associated with the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.
According to its latest report – released this Saturday afternoon – 11,551 confirmed deaths and another 4,272 suspects have been reported (with clinical confirmation, but without ratification by PCR examination), with a cut-off until 8:42 p.m. on September 3 just passed.
Of the total – and as the trend has been – the Metropolitan region concentrates the majority of fatalities, with 11,321. They are followed by Valparaíso (1,193), Antofagasta (604) and O’Higgins (541).
Difference with other years
The analysis published by the Ministry of Health division also stated that when making a comparison of registered and reported deaths in the last five years in Chile (2016-2020) of all possible causes (covid-19 or not), it is observed that as of May 2020 there is an increase above the average of the previous four years.
Accumulated deaths in 2020 between January and August are equivalent to one 19% more deaths in relation to the average of deaths accumulated in the same period in 2016 to 2019.
The mortality rate for August shows an increase of 2% compared to the average for the same month from 2016 to 2019.
