The President of Chile, Sebastian Piñera, promulgated this Friday the law that modifies the impediment for women to get married, which until now discriminated in favor of men.

The new law updates a standard in force from the 19th century, which defined a period of 270 days where women could not marry based on an eventual “presumption of paternity of children that the woman could have in her second marriage.”

Piñera affirmed that his government is committed to equality between men and women, ensuring that this is not a cause of “left or right.”

“We want to eliminate the absurd discrimination that still exists between men and women”,
added the president.

Along the same lines, Piñera stressed that they are “going to enact a law that allows pregnant women with jurisdiction that, if it expires in an emergency period, extend it.”

Finally, the president said that they will present a plan to boost the recovery of jobs, but that it will focus mainly on women.
