“Accidental witness”
“Patricio Guijón was the least political of Salvador Allende’s personal doctors. He was also the most distracted and naive. He joined the Presidency’s team of doctors on the recommendation of his colleague and friend Arturo Jirón, former Minister of Health of the Popular Unity”, recalls a report published in 2011 by Cyprus, by journalist Juan Cristóbal Peña.
“That day of Tuesday, September 11, 1973 (…) after the aerial bombardment and with La Moneda on fire, once Allende ordered his collaborators to surrender to the coup forces, Dr. Guijón will remember that when he began to Leaving did something ‘really absurd’: he retraced his steps in search of a gas mask as a souvenir for his eldest son. According to his account, He was at it when he opened the doors of the Independencia room, where Allende had shut himself up, and he saw it in the precise moments: sitting in an armchair, with his back to the wall, the President was holding a rifle whose barrel pressed his chin, a dry shot, part of the skull and the brains were blown up, “says the note.
“Since then the surgeon Patricio Guijón became he witness to the death of Salvador Allende. Accidental witness“wrote Juan Cristóbal Peña, at the time -almost a decade ago- when Allende’s body had been exhumed to dispel doubts about his death, before versions that pointed to his murder in the Government Palace.
In Cooperative radio, on January 28, 2011, the doctor Guijón related: “I saw when the head, bones and brain mass flew. He (Allende) was sitting in an armchair that was leaning against the wall facing the street, there was a large window and he was holding the submachine gun (sic) in his hands and I saw the skull explode“.

He unanimous report of the experts, which confirmed the suicide, after the exhumation, coincided with “the conclusion that the Allende family had,” he said, once the process was completed, the Senator Isabel Allende, daughter of the former President.
“President Allende, on September 11, 1973, faced with the extreme circumstances that he lived through, made the decision to take his life before being humiliated or experiencing any other situation.“declared Isabel Allende in July 2011.
After September 11, Guijón – arrested along with other collaborators of the President – was transferred to Dawson Island, in a group that also included Sergio Bitar, Orlando Letelier, doctor Arturo Jirón, Sergio Vuskovic and Osvaldo Puccio.
The death of Patricio Guijón coincides with the 50th anniversary of Salvador Allende Gossens’ victory at the polls: September 4, 1970.
