The mayor of the Bío Bío region, Sergio GiacamanHe gave a press conference after the national authorities asked him to retract his criticism of the government’s plan to celebrate National Holidays.
The regional authority ruled out resigning and affirmed that they maintain loyalty to the central government and President Sebastián Piñera, but that they would not back down in their questions.
“My role is to represent the reality of the region with the other authorities, it would be incoherent to retract, I keep it ”, he asserted.
Giacaman lowered the profile of the public questions against him from the ministers Enrique Paris (health) and Jaime Bellolio (spokesperson), stating that he has no problems with being “mentioned”.
“I have no problem with the minister calling me or mentioning me, as well as he could say the same (…) Here we must not be confused, here the problem is not the ministers or it is not me, it is the coronavirus ”, he explained.
This Friday, the ministers Enrique and Bellolio, referred to the statements of the mayor of Bío Bío, who questioned part of the plan “Fondéate en tu Casa”, stating that it is a “contradictory” and “permissive” measure for the communes in quarantine.
Paris said that “I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the regions, but also call attention to some regional authorities that have to join the national effort and not have opinions that are sometimes legitimate, but that they delegitimize the national opinion that we have tried to convey ”.
For its part, Bellolio also joined the call for attention, stating that “I have spoken with the mayor of Bío Bío, who has told me that he is going to correct his statements, because the important thing is how we can get out of the pandemic together to begin the recovery together ”.
