“Within the program of the President’s Government Sebastian Piñera one of the relevant milestones was the reduction of the cost of medicines and with the Cenabast Law it is being achieved ”, said Paris when announcing the implementation of the law today.
In detail, the statute allows the central supply of the public health system to mediate the purchase of drugs from private pharmacies, which must sell those products to the public at a maximum price set by a committee of experts.

Details of the Cenabast Law
After five months of white march of the norm, the minister of Health concurred, next to the director of the Central National of Supply (Cenabast), Valentín Díaz; and the director of the Institute of Public Health, Heriberto García, to the Fracción Pharmacy, which accepted the regulations and is part of the 210 that already sell drugs at lower prices than large chains and other outlets, which do not mediate their purchases with the state agency.
“It is a dream that is destined for the most humble and needy people to be able to acquire medicines that in some cases are 800% cheaper than drugs that do not have this seal, ”added Paris, referring to the fact that pharmacies adhering to the norm will be able to differentiate themselves with a visible seal.
Valentín Díaz, for his part, described the implementation of the standard “as excellent news”, while remarking that “There are 149 remedies that are on the list, with prices that are two to three times cheaper on average.”
Of the participating pharmacies the 50% is in the Metropolitan region and the other 50% in regions such as Valparaíso, La Araucanía, Maule, O’Higgins, Coquimbo, Bío Bío, Magallanes and Arica.
Heriberto García, director of the Institute of Public Health, reported that “they will monitor and monitor pharmaceutical establishments, to ensure compliance with this law and ensure access to these drugs that will have a lower cost.
Therefore, the role of the ISP will be focused on supporting and guiding pharmacies in the implementation of this new requirement.
Steps to adhere
The operation of the law indicates that It will be the interested pharmacies or pharmaceutical warehouses that must request the intermediation from Cenabast.
After receiving the application, Cenabast will evaluate if it meets the requirements.
Once approved, the agency will proceed to establish an agreement with the pharmacy, which will define a limit to the marketing price of drugs.
The establishment in agreement must inform Cenabast monthly of its request for required pharmaceutical products and the Central will coordinate with the laboratories in agreement the dispatch of the remedies.
All Cenabast intermediation is public, so they will be available on the agency’s website.
