Experts sweep the government’s “Go home” plan and warn: “We are not going to have a second wave, it will be a tsunami”

Confusingly announced with great fanfare, the Government gave the go-ahead to the “Fondéate en casa” plan, which will allow people to gather in their homes to celebrate the presence of COVID-19 in Chile on the occasion of National Holidays .

Confusing because in the first instance it was said that the quarantines that governed the country were going to be lifted during the holidays, which caused panic among citizens. The same Ministry of Health had to go out to deny and correct this information, ensuring that in the communes with confinement – the one that will not be lifted – they will have a special permit in the Virtual Police Station to meet with family members in small groups.

Correction that, however, did not silence the criticism of health specialists, who warned that there are no “reasonable” reasons to relax sanitary measures in the middle of the National Holidays, as stated by Juan Carlos Said, internist at the Sótero del Río Hospital .

“The coronavirus is not going to take a vacation, it is not going to celebrate the 18th, it is not going to take the weekend to rest,” Said told Radio Cooperative.

Along these lines, Said criticized the government’s contradictory message, telling them “take advantage of the 18th to visit your families, to meet in larger groups of people (…) especially after they announce the delay in the schedule. of the curfew. “

“The situation in various regions of the country is very critical. I think a clearer message would have been more appropriate and say: ‘Look at this is very painful, we all want to celebrate the eighteenth’ – I include myself, I am exhausted from the pandemic- But, unfortunately, we are experiencing a very critical situation that is not something that is experienced every year; this is lived once every 100 years, “he said.

“Region by region”

Said indicated that, in the same way, this has to be seen “region by region”, since “Magellan is with a positivity of 20%, which is totally dramatic, it is with a total occupation of the beds. It is different from the situation they live, for example, in Providencia. We have a long country. “

Something shared by Claudia Cortés, vice president of the Chilean Society of Infectious Diseases: “They are standardizing a situation for all of Chile, when not all of Chile is in the same conditions,” he told Radio T13.

For Cortés, “lifting a restriction is complex, because we are not going to have a second wave: it will be a tsunami because we are not epidemiologically prepared for an opening of this type.”

The plan, according to Cortés, “seems confusing, there is no clarity. It is true that they did not use the term that the quarantines were lifted, but that was understood by the press and the entire population.”

“When they say that only 5 external people can come, who is going to control that? And there is a new ingredient: alcohol and with that, self-care capabilities are lost, “she added.

“We should try to make people understand that this 18, we are going to spend it only with the people of our house and it is not the time to invite the family,” he concluded, warning that if they do not take care of themselves, “we are going to have a regrowth as we are seeing it in Spain “.

The justification of Zúñiga

Faced with the wave of objections, this day was the Undersecretary of Assistance Networks, Arturo Zúñiga, who came out to justify on behalf of the Government the controversial plan designed for National Holidays.

In statements to Radio Cooperativa, the authority said that this measure was taken “thinking that we have a holiday of our National Holidays that we all want to celebrate. For many of us it is like the best holiday of the year.”

However, he said that it was decided to put restrictions and in the case of “the communes in step 1 and 2, we know that they have been in quarantine for quite a few weeks and that they were probably going to meet anyway, that is why we prefer to regulate that meeting it is done, but with a limited number of people, with the aim of having traceability controlled ”.

He also pointed out that “the restrictions that have been placed are quite harsh on 280 communes, which are those in step 3, 4 and 5, in which up to now 50 people can meet, that is restricted to only 5 people within of a home, in addition to those who live. That is a measure that is taken into consideration with the advisory council ”.

“That the possibility of meeting with up to 50 people has been restricted to 280 communes, limiting it to only 5, is something very restrictive that will help us so that if there is an outbreak, we can have traceability,” he added.
