The same day that the truckers’ union lowered the strike that lasted for seven days, the Senate Public Safety Commission passed the so-called Juan Barrios law, by 2 votes in favor of Senators Felipe Kast and Marcela Sabat and one abstention by Senator Francisco Huenchumilla.
According to reports from the Senate, in the session the representatives of the Ministry of the Interior, Carabineros, PDI and the Public Ministry presented the statistics of recent years and revealed that only this year there have been more than 500 arson attacks where the 50% has affected real estate and 22% cargo vehicles.
Senators Felipe Harboe (PPD) and José Miguel Insulza (PS) did not participate in the session. This situation was claimed by Francisco Huenchumilla (DC), who considered that the vote had to be carried out with all the members of the commission.
Specifically, the initiative introduces modifications to the rules of the Penal Code referring to the crime of arson, specifying the definition of the crime contemplated in article 474 of said regulation.
It is worth noting -in addition- that this law is one of the 13 requested by the truckers in the framework of the protests they carried out to demand greater security to be able to travel on the roads, and that it was finally lifted this Wednesday after reaching an agreement with the Government.
