The Minister of Labor, Maria Jose Zaldivar, referred to the zero peso proposal as readjustment to the minimum wage presented by the Government and which must be processed in Congress.

The Secretary of State defended the position of the Executive assuring that the context of the pandemic and economic crisis that the country is experiencing should be looked at, since it was agreed that “If it is increased, jobs may be destroyed.”

In conversation with Radio ADN, the head of Labor indicated that “If it is increased with the objective of protecting workers you may encounter a problem that is very complex because there could eventually be an adverse effect: job losses, because a person may not be able to pay the minimum wage. “

Along these lines, Zadívar added that “This discussion must be done by taking many elements and seeing the complete scenario, approximately 800 thousand workers receive the minimum wage, of these 3 out of 4 are SME workers that have been very affected by this crisis and many of them have had months without income “.

The head of the Treasury assured that “there would be nothing more comfortable than raising the minimum wage by 10 or 20 thousand pesos, that would be a fantastic economy of resources.”
