The first impasse between the ministers Pérez and Bellolio

I am a friend of Pablo Longueira, I have known him for more than 30 years. I am sure that Pablo Longueira is absolutely innocent, he will prove his innocence. Therefore, you have no obstacles to developing the life you want to lead, whether political or not.

With these words, the minister Victor Perez responded this Tuesday to the query about what he thought of the mayor’s sayings Evelyn Matthei, who held that Longueira “cannot preside over the UDI” while his judicial situation in the SQM case is not resolved.

Thus, along with defending Longueira’s innocence, the Minister of the Interior added – in relation to Matthews sayings – that “You always have to be especially careful with words and concepts when you address people.”

The statements of the chief of staff were immediately considered an error in La Moneda, because always, they say in the Palace, the government’s line is not to pronounce on judicial cases and to remain neutral.

In this sense, several privately regretted his sayings and even recalled that the Minister of Justice, Hernán Larraín, also a UDI militant, committed a similar setback when he defended the former senator Jaime Orpis in the framework of the investigation of the Corpesca case. In any case, the Executive says that this situation was “more complex”, since Larraín is the head of Justice.

However, the issue did not stop there. About half an hour later, the government spokesman, Jaime Bellolio, was consulted about Pérez’s words in a press point he made in La Moneda. The Secretary of State -also militant UDI- he distanced himself from the statements of the head of the Interior, marking the first crossing between the two since they arrived at the cabinet, just over a month ago.

“It is not for the government to say whether a person is innocent or not. That corresponds to the courts of justice. There is an investigation that is in progress and, therefore, it is not for us to meddle in that “Bellolio said. And he added: “Regarding the possible candidacy or not of him in the internal party, it also has to do with the internal party.”

In La Moneda they affirm that the position established by Bellolio is the correct one and that Pérez spoke more as a “parliamentarian”, not as chief of staff. In that sense, the same sources maintain that the Interior Minister was aware that he was wrong.

Earlier, Longueira himself, in an interview with Radio Cooperativa, had referred to Matthei’s sayings. “(The statements) hurt me, because I expected them from other people (…). One is innocent until proven otherwise. I am, ”he said.

Later, the interview was stressed by the queries regarding his judicial situation. And Longueira, with an annoyed tone, continued. “I don’t have backpacks, because I don’t have a glass roof. Put it in your head (…). Do you know who the Horvitz is? You know perfectly who it is. The communist, criminal lawyer, who is persecuting me in the State Defense Council, ”he said, referring to lawyer María Inés Horvitz.
