The multi-union was seeking an increase from the current 320,500 pesos to 400,000 pesos, which could be combined with an increase in the Guaranteed Minimum Income. Meanwhile, Minister Briones proposed a 0 peso increase, considering the zero variation that the CPI has had.
The Ministry of Finance sent to Congress the bill that readjusts the legal minimum wage, with no increase for the period September 2020 and the same month of 2021.
In this way, there would be no readjustment and the basic salary would remain at 320,500 pesos. The arguments of the Treasury were the zero accumulated inflation since March to date, and the decline in economic activity.
As reported from the portfolio, the fall positions the country at levels similar to 2017, when the minimum wage was 291,426 pesos.
After a last meeting yesterday, the Central Unitary of Workers regretted that their proposal for an increase to 400,000 pesos was not accepted, which also incorporated an increase in the current Guaranteed Minimum Income.
However, the CUT recognized the Executive’s disposition regarding other labor matters, such as advancing the protection of jobs and greater demands on the private sector to access state subsidies.
In the House Finance Committee, the deputy for National Renovation, Alejandro Santana, regretted that both parties did not reach a consensus regarding a readjustment that considers the current context of the economy, where the main objective is to take care of jobs.
For his part, the communist deputy who presides over the parliamentary body, Daniel Núñez, said that he will support the position of the CUT, for which he proposed to evaluate alternative mechanisms to alleviate the burden that the readjustment will mean in small and medium-sized companies.
The parameter of the CUT to request a minimum wage of 400,000 pesos takes as a reference the Emergency Family Income, which grants 100,000 pesos for each member of households with informal income.
As stated -through a statement- the Minister of Finance, Ignacio Briones, the null readjustment “maintains the purchasing power of the workers”, “Responds to the reality of the labor market” and “is responsible for small and medium-sized enterprises.”
With the sending of the project, it is now up to the House and Senate Finance Committees to deliberate on the proposal.
