The idea was rejected in Chile Vamos, while the Electoral Service reiterated that it will comply with current regulations.

The Government has reiterated that it will not promote a “short law” to allow the vote of people infected with coronavirus, in the October plebiscite. However, the matter is still valid, with less than two months to go before the consultation.

This Monday, Senators Guido Girardi, of the PPD, and the independent Pedro Araya, they will present in the Constitutional Commission of the Upper House, a constitutional reform project that seeks to modify the recently enacted Safe Plebiscite Law.

The initiative, with a single article, establishes that “the Board of Directors of the Electoral Service must issue, together with the Ministry of Health, a regulation that regulates the way in which those with a positive covid-19 diagnosis may exercise their right to vote.”

Senator Guido Girardi noted that there is enough technology to guarantee remote voting.

The director of the Servel board of directors, Patrick Santamaria, avoided referring to the senators’ proposal, and reiterated that the institution will comply with current regulations.

In Chile Vamos there are sectors that ask to ensure the vote of infected people, although they recognize that there is no margin to process a project.

The deputy RN, Sebastián Torrealba, described as “irresponsible” to enter -at this point- a constitutional reform.

The UDI deputy, Patricio Melero, said that it is not possible to legislate on this matter in such a short time, although he did not rule out that this possibility may be feasible for the municipal elections of April 2021.

The constitutional reform that Guido Girardi and Pedro Araya will enter joins other parliamentary motions that point to the vote of those infected with covid-19 by voting at home or by mail.
