The former senator of the UDI, Pablo Longueira, on his return to active politics, announced that he will vote for approval in the constitutional plebiscite, he will run for the presidency of the UDI and will also compete to be a member of the constituent body that would define a new Magna Carta, in the event that it is so determined in the Constitution. Election day of next October 25.

Regarding his position in support of a new Constitution, the former national unionist president stated in an interview with El Mercurio that he is for the approval “But not from scratch.”

Among his arguments, the former minister of the first Piñera government points out: “because he let’s spoil the party on the left undemocratic. We are not going to play the game of the violent. If we all vote I approve, it will be a great night of unity ”.

“I am struck by the level the country has reached in such a short time. I see a serious institutional risk. There are many who want the Government of Chile Vamos not to end its term. What they are looking for on the night of the plebiscite is to throw Sebastián Piñera away. And our job consists of preventing that scenario, that the Constitution and democracy be respected, ”Longueira said.

He added that “I have no doubt that the vast majority of Chileans, who are moderate, want us to rescue the best of the current Constitution and to agree on the necessary changes for the next one. In crisis, people look for moderation, not extremism ”.

In the same vein, the reaffirmed UDI militant sent a message to President Piñera.

“I cannot understand how the President does not clearly define his government by the ‘I approve, but not from a blank page’, which is completely different from ‘I approve to change everything’. It is a positive message for citizens ”.

Longueira affirmed that he has already spoken with other leaders of Chile. We are going to change the course since the rejection of the approval in his sector.

Longuiera returns to public political activism, after several years of absence, when in 2016 he resigned from the UDI, based on his involvement in the controversial SQM and Corpesca cases.

Presidency of the UDI and constituent

On his decision to lead the UDI, as a way of consensus within the store that today is headed by Senator Jacqueline van Rysselberghe, a staunch defender of “rejection.”
