Arsenal defeated Liverpool 5-4 on penalties, crowning themselves Community Shield champions for the 16th time in its history, closely stalking Manchester United’s record.
The duel between gunboats and reds started with an advantage for Mikel Arteta’s men, after Pierre Emerick Aubayemyang opened the account at 12 ‘ with a great goal that he celebrated as a Wakandan in tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, actor behind Black Panther.
But Jurgen Klopp’s weren’t ready to give up the cup, so TAkumi Minamino equalized in the 73rd minute, forcing Arsenal to go to penalties after completing regulation time without increasing the score.
The goals for Liverpool were scored by Mohamed Salah, Fabinho Tavares, Takumi Minamino and Curtis Jones, while Rhian Brewster was in charge of missing his shot, giving the Gunners the advantage.
For its part, Reiss Nelson, Maitland-Niles, Cedric Soares, David Luis and Pierre Aubameyang all correctly scored their penalties to give Arsenal the Community Shield crown.
With the conquest against Liverpool, Arsenal achieves the 16th Community Shield in its history, coming dangerously close to Manchester United, which boasts 21.
