After the Executive “closed the door” so that people infected with covid-19 can go to vote for the plebiscite on October 25, the national prosecutor, Jorge Abbott, affirmed that they will criminally prosecute those who violate article 318 of the Penal Code.
The foregoing was announced in an interview with La Tercera, where Abbott said that they will not have a choice if the Servel or the Government do not agree on a “special formula” for these people to vote. “We are going to have to prosecute those infected by covid who go to vote”, said.
Statements that are given in the framework of the existing discussion at the national level, regarding whether or not people infected with covid-19 can vote in the plebiscite next October.
The president of the association of prosecutors Claudio Uribe, affirmed that in this matter, the courts should be the ones to rule on this matter.
For his part, the senator member of the Health Commission, Rabindranath Quinteros, assured that does not believe that this measure will be legislated prior to the plebisciteHowever, he pointed out that work must be done in the future to modernize the voting system.
Likewise, Abbott, affirmed that this is an exceptional situation, and that they will enforce the law, that is, sanction under article 318 of the Penal Code, if there is no definition for the voting of infected persons.

After this Friday, the National Prosecutor’s Office announced the opening of criminal investigations in 8 regions of the country for the blockade of routes, the prosecutor Abbott affirmed this Saturday that “as we have persecuted all kinds of violence, wherever it comes from ”.
In this way, he exemplified that in recent days people who caused damage in the framework of the social outbreak, but also state agents accused of blind Fabiola Campillai and Gustavo Gatica, have been formalized.
In this sense, the national prosecutor indicated that “the Office of the Prosecutor is complying and will continue to comply with its obligations in strict accordance with the law and the principle of objectivity. All the officials of this institution are committed to that, nobody is above the law ”.
Finally, he affirmed that the Public Ministry has all the will to investigate the recent acts of violence in La Araucanía, as well as the burning of cabins and private houses in Lanalhue on Friday.

Reactions to Abbott’s announcement
The representative of the National Federation of Truck Owners of the South (Fedesur) in Los Angeles, Freddy Martínez, rejected the measure and assured that they will not allow this type of pressure.
Martínez added that the mobilization they have been carrying out since Thursday of this week is precisely so that the Justice authorities understand that what is being sought is to end the arson attacks where there have been people who have been shot.
From the ruling party, the councilor for Los Angeles and national advisor of RN, Daniel Badilla, shared the position of the truckers and added that the government must grant their requests, just as he did with the machi Celestino Córdova.
Another person who did not agree with the announcement of the national prosecutor, Jorge Abbott, was the Mayor of Los Lagos, Harry Jürgensen, who argued that he said has a “different opinion”, but avoided going deeper.
