Belarus decided to withdraw the credentials of a dozen foreign media journalists working in the country, as revealed by the Association of Journalists of Belarus (APB), after the latest protests against President Aleksandr Lukashenko.
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry had already stripped the credentials of four other journalists who worked as correspondents for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty and two others from the British channel BBC.
“They have just called two other BBC journalists, informed them that their credentials are canceled as of today,” the APB spokesperson reported. In addition, the credentials of a journalist from the Reuters news agency, another from the AP agency, the German channels Deutsche Welle and Radio France International were withdrawn.
The Russian embassy in Minsk previously said that two journalists from the US agency AP and two others from the German television channel ARD, all Russian citizens, were expelled from Belarus, according to the Russian news agency Sputnik.
In a show of state harassment, the Belarusian police transferred about 50 journalists to a police station last Thursday who planned to cover an unauthorized demonstration by opponents in Minsk, the country’s capital. Similarly, the Ministry of the Interior of the European country said afterwards that “practically all duly instituted journalists of the media, as well as foreign correspondents accredited to the Ministry, were released.”
