The British Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) achieved pole position at the Belgian Grand Prix, his fifth pole in seven races in 2020, this Saturday at Spa-Francorchamps, and dedicated it to the American actor Chadwick Boseman, died as a result of cancer.
In the qualifying session, Hamilton beat his Finnish teammate Valtteri Bottas – by half a second – and two drivers who were teammates in the past, Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Australian Daniel Ricciardo (Renault).
A year after having achieved the first two places on the grid at the same circuit and the victory in the race at the hands of Charles Leclerc, the scenario is radically different for Ferrari, which is having a disappointing season: the Monegasque scored the 13th best time and his German partner Sebastian Vettel the 14th.
The third line will be for the Thai Alexander Albon (Red Bull) and for the French Esteban Ocon (Renault); the fourth for the Spanish Carlos Sainz Jr (McLaren) and the Mexican Sergio Pérez (Racing Point).
“It’s a special pole for me,” confessed Hamilton, the first black driver in F1 history.
“When I woke up I learned the sad news of Chadwick’s death. 2020 was difficult in itself and this news shocked me. It was not easy to find myself again, but I knew that I had to go to the track and drive perfectly ”.
Starring in the 2018 movie ‘Black Panther’, Boseman, 43, became the first actor to play a black superhero.
