22 mayors of Valparaíso sign letter addressed to Piñera and Mañalich: request regional quarantine | National

A total of 22 mayors from the Valparaíso region signed a letter addressed to President Sebastián Piñera and Minister Jaime Mañalich, requesting that the state of regional quarantine.

They fear collapse of regional hospitals due to the increase recorded by both national and regional figures.

Several regional chiefs of the Valparaíso region arrived at the Regional Intendancy, to deliver a letter requesting the president and Minister Mañalich to establish a regional quarantine as soon as possible.

In the letter, which details each communal chief who adheres to the petition, they indicate the main concerns that they maintain and that lead them to make the request.

Among these points are: the proximity of the regions, the increase in infections that have been registered for weeks in the Valparaíso region, the fragility of the current health system in the region, which could be collapsed in the face of increased contagion.

In this regard, the mayor of Valparaíso, Jorge Sharp, pointed out that the quarantine is the most effective method to prevent the massive spread of people.

Meanwhile, Luis Mella, mayor of Quillota, indicated that despite the negative effects that the quarantine state may bring, it is the only effective method to prevent massive contagion.

Regarding this situation, Mayor Jorge Martínez stated that quarantine is a measure that must be taken responsibly and that the Ministry will know when the exact moment is to establish it, emphasizing that international experience has shown that misapplication of quarantines could lead to even worse effects in contagions.
