“We do not understand the logic, Pirque is attached to Puente Alto, it causes us a problem”

The increase in infections in the Metropolitan Region led the health authority to order a total quarantine from this Friday at 10 p.m., but only considering the Province of Santiago and six other communes around it. That is to say, 13 other communes are exempt from the measure.

These are the rural communes of the region, such as Til Til, Pirque, Calera de Tango, Paine, Alhué, Curacaví, María Pinto, Melipilla, San Pedro, El Monte, Isla de Maipo, Peñaflor and Talagante.

Cristian Balmaceda, Mayor of Pirque and President of the Association of Rural Municipalities (AMUR), manifested itself in “The Puzzle” of Agriculture and affirmed that “we are as surprised” to have been excluded.

“Among the things we have asked for a long time ago is that if the entire Metropolitan Region was declared quarantine, the entire Metropolitan Region will be declared and no communes will be left out. We don’t understand the logic“He assured.

“Pirque is a rural commune that It is attached to the largest commune in Chile which is Puente Alto and the commune with the most infections. And the people from Puente Alto come to Pirque, they come to walk the weekend, they come to work during the week, there is no control of that quarantine. We have asked that there be quarantines within the commune limits, ”he indicated.

As an example, he says, “the mayor of Calera de Tango said that since shops and services in San Bernardo have been closed a little, people have gone to buy from Calera de Tango. And so on. It causes us a problem. We have asked for reconsideration. ”

When asked if they could be reconsidered, the mayor says that “we hope it will be that fast, but it is difficult.”

“I take the example of Pirque not because he is the mayor, but the level of contagion is higher in percentage than that of the communes that are in quarantine. We are at 170 for every 100,000 inhabitants, ”he added.

This is why the mayor went further and reached an agreement with the Carabineros. “As they declared total quarantine in Buin, San Bernardo and Puente Alto that border Pirque, apart from San José de Maipo, I came to an agreement with Carabineros de Pirque and nobody enters or leaves Pirque unless they have a special pass. We are going to be aloneHe declared.

“But I am concerned about the other rural communes that cannot do it. So if measures are taken, it should be for the entire region, because we know that the Chilean is stubborn, “he added.

Pedro Carcuro: Will this measure of leaving them out of quarantine have to do to maintain the supply of fruits, vegetables, agricultural food to the Metropolitan Region? Could it be the cause?

– It is not so, because there are also rural communes that have been quarantined. Like Buin, like Hill … who are suppliers of the Lo Valledor or Vega Central fair.

PC: What is the criteria then?

– That’s the part we don’t understand. It is that we have fewer infections and they are more open and less populated areas, that is the explanation that has been given. But what we say is that finally the urban areas of each rural commune are also declared quarantined, because we also have agglomerations in the urban areas of rural communes. Talagante has a high COVID index, Melipilla, which even appeared in the press … and there are those infected in urban areas.
