Last Wednesday, May 6, President Sebastián Piñera announced Macarena Santelices as the new Minister for Women and Gender Equity, after more than 50 days under the charge of the deputy minister, Carolina Cuevas. Oppositional reactions and convictions regarding this appointment did not wait long through social networks, the criticism came from all sectors, but the most relevant were those from those who worked with Santelices in Olmué.
Among them, the teacher chosen in 2013 as one of the 100 best teachers in the country, according to a Mineduc contest, Noemí Cáceres, who, in an interview with The Bewilderment, He related the series of irregularities committed by the minister who at that time was acting as mayor, allegations that included covering up sexual harassment and irregular dismissals.
Noemí Cáceres, a teacher with an assignment of pedagogical excellence, witnessed the mistreatment and situations of harassment exerted by the director of the school in which she worked at the time, a newly graduated teacher. Cáceres revealed to the then mayor Santelices through a letter that, in January 2017, the director of the establishment, during a seminar in Santiago, sexually harassed his colleague, insisting for three days that he go with him to his room, this by refusing , began to receive constant harassment from the man during the rest of his period at school.
Cáceres’ colleague “was dropped from the commission on a trip to France by the director. In the months following the trip to the seminar, until the end of December, the colleague was repeatedly subjected to mistreatment (…) ”, Noemí told the aforementioned media that her colleague had been ridiculed in front of the students and that she had Trying to intervene in his defense, he began to receive abuse of power by him, which culminated in the transfer of Naomi to another establishment in addition to the unjustified dismissal of his colleague.
After the separation of her colleague, the feeling of injustice for what happened motivated her to accompany her young colleague to the Department of Education of the municipality and leave letters to the mayor. “No one wanted to listen to her, in the end she looked for a job and left the region,” explains Noemí.
“I have no doubt that the management of Santelices sought to cover certain situations. Letters and correspondences were filtered according to her needs. Unfortunately, I have to say that there was such a fine cover-up here that no evidence was even left, “said Naomi.
In as much the present minister of the Woman, indicated that “that year, once the antecedents of the case were known, she took the pertinent measures”, but without detailing what measures she refers to.
The director of the establishment continues to occupy that position and said that he had no information on the complaint and that he did not recall the details since he was not summoned to any administrative summary in the municipality.
Olmué Councilman Pablo Altamirano (PS) confirmed Noemí’s version, noting that the letters she presented were never delivered to the Council. In as much from the new administration they expressed that they do not have antecedents reason why they are not going away to refer to the subject, thus it indicated the legal adviser of the municipality, Danny Quezada.
Consequences of the case
After all this episode of stress, Naomi had a medical check-up, which revealed that she had an invasive rheumatoid with motor impossibility, a fact that led her to present medical licenses, over time she was fired by the municipality. Despite the requests she sent to be reinstated, Macarena Santelices refused all of them and did not provide a response to the official.

After multiple attempts made by Noemí, she gave up the fight for her reinstatement and prioritized her health, so the appointment of Macarena Santelices as Minister of Women fell to her like a bucket of cold water.
