Support for his work under the command of the National Institute of Human Rights (NHRI) received Sergio Micco, questioned within the body after the interview in which he referred to the duties and rights in society.
After criticism from some NHRI councilors and the 2 civil servants associations, the lawyer added external support, after – through a letter – former ministers, lawyers and the daughters of the assassinated General Carlos Prats, among other people, highlight their “efficient and responsible work, which is being weakened from within the same institution”.
The text was initialed by more than 70 people, including former ministers Sergio Bitar, José Joaquín Brunner, Carlos Figueroa, Carlos Massad, José Antonio Vieragallo and Ignacio Walker Prieto; the lawyers María Angélica Fuentes, Luciano Fouillioux and Ricardo Halabi, and Angélica and Sofía Prats Cuthbert.
“The National Institute of Human Rights belongs to all Chileans. We strive to create the NHRI as an independent public body to monitor the observance of human rights in society (…) today that institutionality is at risk“they emphasize.
For the signatories, “the important, effective and timely work that the NHRI has carried out in recent months on the occasion of the social outbreak and the pandemic that we are experiencing is public and notorious throughout the country.”
They assure that “the current situation that exists within the NHRI, headed by attorney Sergio Micco Aguayo, in whom we recognize a long-standing commitment to human rights and efficient and responsible work, is being weakened from within the same institution. The entity’s march must be protected in every order, as well as its actions in denouncing and defending, as the only national body in charge of these important tasks. “
“We make a call, now that it is still possible to amend the course and not sacrifice an essential entity for the people and civil society of the country, to put down the actions that impede the normal development of their activities, with respect and dialogue, without prejudice to considering in the future adopting the measures that perfect their institutionality, “they conclude.
Until this Wednesday, NHRI officials carried out a stoppage of activities, in rejection of the management of Micco, who does not recognize a track record in the field of human rights, asking not only for his resignation, but also for the members of his council, for responding to their appointments to “binomial” criteria.
The mobilization, however, was deposed “to join the emergency work that is being carried out in the context of the health crisis.”
