Almost seven and a half million people live in these 38 communes, 92% of the entire Metropolitan region and 38% of the country’s inhabitants.
Accumulated and active cases
In the 38 communes of the Metropolitan region that will enter quarantine this Friday are concentrated 9,901 active cases according to the epidemiological report of the Ministry of Health published on May 12, a document that contains updated data until May 10 at 7:00 p.m.
They also include 20,664 of the 30,063 infected that were counted up to that date. In other words, 68.7% of the total number of people who have been infected in the country since the outbreak began are in these areas.
When reviewing the information according to the number of infected persons per 100,000 inhabitants (the rate of accumulated infections) we see that the commune with the highest index is Independence, with 698.3 infected persons per 100,000 citizens. Recoleta follows with 540.8 and San Joaquín with 459.
Among the least affected in terms of rate are Padre Hurtado, with 129.4 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants, Buin with 138.6 and Lampa with 145.9.
Population characterization
In these territories they live more than 35 thousand people in poverty by income, in addition to having 63 camps in which almost five thousand homes.
The communes with the highest percentage of people in poverty are La Pintana, with 14.1%; El Bosque with 9.6% and San Bernardo with 9.4%. In terms of multidimensional poverty, that list is headed by Lo Espejo with 37.5%, Cerro Navia with 34.6% and La Pintana with 32.7%.
In addition to these indicators, there are communes that have a high percentage of people over 60 years of age. According to INE projections for 2020, these municipalities gather 1,192,163 people over that age.
Data
This note was prepared from different public databases belonging to the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, the National Statistics Institute, and the results of the 2017 Census.
For the population calculations, the projection of the population by commune for the year 2020 made by the National Institute of Statistics was used based on the results of the Census 2017, the same figures used by the Ministry of Health in each of its epidemiological reports from COVID. -19. These reports also emanate data on accumulated infections, active infections and incidence rates of COVID-19 in the different communes. The calculation of adults over 60 years also corresponds to INE’s projections for 2020 based on the 2017 Census.
The totals and percentages of people in a situation of income poverty and multidimensional poverty correspond to that published by the Ministry of Social Development based on the Casen survey. The number of camps and homes in them emanates from the cadastre of camps made by the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism.
