Family Income Emergency remains unconvincing: opposition senators describe it as “dropper aid” with “fine print”

The Emergency Family Income (IFE) finally became law after being dispatched by the Senate. His path to enactment was not easy, since it included a presidential veto and constant criticism from the opposition, who asked to increase the amount of the benefit, which will be paid at the end of the month, to 4.5 million Chileans, as has indicated the Government.

Precisely, in the vote on Wednesday, although it was approved by 42 votes, 23 of these were abstentions of opposition senators. They had already done so in the first instance, forcing them to repeat the vote.

One of those who abstained was DC Senator Francisco Huenchumilla, who after the vote sent a message to the Executive: “Delivering more liquidity to families is urgent (…). This family income is insufficient, and the country has savings, indebtedness and other ways to resort. “

Later he added that the Government “as always, puts the opposition between a rock and a hard place. If this veto was not approved, thousands of families did not receive this contribution. What they do not announce is the meagerness of the contribution ”.

Due to this, he asked La Moneda “to abandon his unconscious behavior, of giving dropper aid, in the context of this pandemic. Of course, the idea that it is necessary to take care of resources if new needs arise is understandable. But the reality is that families cannot wait for the government to drip, because nobody can eat on time ”.

“The Government clearly takes advantage of the big headlines, and the Emergency Family Income is one of them,” said the senator. “What people should know is that this Family Income discriminates against households by the origin of their income, if they are Formal or informal. Although they are equally vulnerable households in terms of income, if the income is formal, they will receive less amount of help. This income is not said to offer amounts that do not exceed the extreme poverty line, “he emphasized.

Huenchumilla accused that the Executive failed “on its word”, because of the 2 billion dollars announced to deliver liquidity to families, “this emergency family income project only occupies 802 million dollars.”

Meanwhile, Senator Carlos Montes (PS), who also abstained, affirmed that they value the IFE, “however, the project has small print. It has problems. The project is an amount that is not enough for a family in a month, it is decreasing, it is cumbersome and slow, and worst of all, most complicated, is that it leaves many families out, families that are just like the others. “

“The families of Santiago are living a very difficult situation. The Government, with humility, must recognize the problems to overcome them. Today the health policy requires changes. The Fogape is in trouble, it is not working well. Unemployment insurance is being associating workers with a lot of abuse (…) In short, we believe that the time has come for the Government to open up to improve the policies that must be done, “he concluded.
