Cochilco intervenes in Codelco union dispute and questions two candidates for the FTC board

A sharp break is taking place among Codelco unions. At the end of March, the leaders of the Federation of Copper Workers (FTC) sent the President of the Republic, Sebastián Piñera, his team to replace Raimundo Espinoza on the Codelco board. However, a few days later the workers of the El Teniente Division sent a letter to the President showing their disagreement with the list presented because, in their opinion, it was not representative.

One of the criticisms of the team presented by the FTC was the presence of two leaders who are being investigated by the Prosecutor’s Office in the life insurance case in Chuquicamata, which also involves the Chilean insurance company Consolidada and the company Gestión y Servicios. These are Alberto Muñoz, leader of union 1 of Chuquicamata, and Mario Lobos, leader of union 2 of the same division.

Given this situation, the Mining Minister, Baldo Prokurica, asked the Chilean Copper Commission (Cochilco) to analyze the legality that these two leaders were proposed to serve on the board of directors. In his response, the executive vice president of Cochilco, Marcos Riveros, maintained that one of the demands and requirements for the directors elected representatives of the workers of the company, is “not to have been convicted or to be charged with a crime that deserves afflictive or perpetual inability to carry out public offices or offices ”. However, it was specified that it is not mandatory for the Executive to carry out a background check.

From the FTC they issued a statement during the afternoon defending the nomination of the two candidates, ensuring that the selection process of the five councilors who made up the team that was presented to the President of the Republic, was carried out in accordance with each and every one of the requirements for the validation of said process.

“We categorically reject the interference of leaders of political parties in the appointment of the representatives of the Federation,” said the FTC.
