By a large majority, the Chamber of Deputies approved this afternoon the ten observations of President Sebastián Piñera that formed the veto to insist on the delivery of an Emergency Family Income for the following three months, to families belonging to the 60% most vulnerable.
After an abrupt processing that involved the rejection of the amounts and the application of the benefit, which forced the government to send a veto, the opposition ended up supporting the idea, and only the members of the Broad Front and the PC abstained in the articles related to amounts and beneficiaries.
Previously, they had anticipated their actions in the Finance Commission, which they approved with 11 votes in favor and 2 abstentions from the Commission’s president, deputy Daniel Núñez (PC) and deputy Giorgio Jackson (FA). Both considered that the sum of the contribution is insufficient.
The government veto maintained the amount of the benefit and that it be descending over time, that is, that a bond will be delivered per capita $ 65,000 the first month; $ 55,250 the second; and $ 45,500 the third. Additionally, delivery is flattened in a single tranche, to 60% of the poorest households. And it is incorporated into the payment of the second and third bonuses, to those over 70 years of age who receive a basic solidarity pension and live alone.
“I want to thank all those who, being dissatisfied with the amounts, have taken a step forward approving the project, because that is what Chileans are asking for in times of crisis, this is a sign of meeting. There is an open invitation to see what we continue to do, this does not end here, “said the Minister of Social Development, Sebastián Sichel.
Along the same lines, his counterpart in the Treasury, Ignacio Briones acknowledged that in the discussion of this initiative there were “legitimate differences”, but appreciated that basically all agreed on the need to urgently attend to the incomes of the most vulnerable families. “This is an unprecedented measure, exceptional, but it is neither the second nor the last aid,” he stressed.
