More than 1,200 samples of people suspected of contagion of coronavirus from the western sector of the Metropolitan Region were lost for “exceeding the conservation time,” denounced the mayor of Cerro Navia Mauro Tamayo.

Specifically, the communal authority maintained -through a thread on its Twitter account- that at the weekend there were 1,800 samples by Covid-19 pending at the West Metropolitan Health Service. “Yesterday (Saturday) they sent 600 results, of which 48 were positive at Cerro Navia, with 1,200 pending to come this Sunday, which did not happen,” he said.

The communal chief added that the remaining 1,200 exams were sent to the laboratory of the Lucio Córdova Hospital, but were rejected for “exceeding the conservation time.” This forces people to be searched one by one to repeat the tests.

Tamayo pointed to The counter that due to this situation, they were informed by the West Metropolitan Health Service that the sample would be taken again starting on Wednesday. “They offered from the Health Service to go themselves to take the samples from Wednesday onwards to those patients who have to repeat it,” he adds.

The West Metropolitan Health Service reportedly replied that they will take the samples again from Wednesday, the day on which they hope to have the logistics to carry out this process. To do this, they asked the mayors to send by mail the list of rejected samples.

Consulted about it during the balance of the Ministry of Health to account for new cases of coronavirus, the Undersecretary of Public Health Paula Daza evaded the question and only referred to point out that “all the exams that reach the different laboratories in case of be exceeding a time, they are distributed to other laboratories that the waiting time is shorter, and that is why today we have more than 70 laboratories distributed, and therefore the number of exams that we are giving answers. We have doubled the number of exams in the last 7 days to respond to the needs of the population. “

The counter The West Metropolitan Health Service was contacted to find out their version of these events, and we are awaiting the response to our request.

Laboratory collapse

The situation denounced by Tamayo is one more sign of the collapse in the laboratory system: last week, The counter reported that the network of public laboratories was reaching its maximum capacity, to the point that the Metropolitan Region was forced to send PCR tests to regions.

Furthermore, due to the saturation of the network of public laboratories in the RM el Minsal, the possibility of hiring private laboratories to process the samples would be considered, thus reducing the waiting time. At the same time, there is a lack of implements to install new sentinel laboratories – those built in universities to help the processing of PCR tests – since the machines to process the exams and the reagents to process the samples are at risk of stock.
