The Ministries of Transport and Education today launched the project “Connectivity for Education 2030”, within the framework of the celebration of “Student Day”. This initiative seeks to improve Internet access for nearly 10,000 educational establishments in 2021, and also gradually increase connection speeds until the end of 2029.
This is an increase from the current average offered by the State from 30 kbps to 100 kbps per student at the beginning of the project and which is projected to increase to 1,000 kbps at the end of the mandatory period of the bases.
Schools that will have access for the first time
According to the authorities, this increase enables pedagogical activities with technology in the classroom. In fact, the project allows 2,586 schools to access the network for the first time, benefiting around 530,000 students.
To this end, from May this year, the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel) will begin to work on the call for tenders to companies that are interested in connecting to educational establishments.
Subsequently, during the second semester of 2020, the Mineduc will enable the application platform for municipal schools, private individuals subsidized and / or dependent on Local Education Services (SLE) who want to access this program, which seeks to equate Chile with the standard from developed countries and that has a maximum subsidy of up to $ 13,000 million per year.
Access for over 3 million students
“Connectivity for Education 2030 seeks to deliver high-speed Internet to more than 10,000 establishments, which translates into 3,200,000 basic and secondary education students from all over Chile. This initiative will be carried out in 10 years, including improvements in service every two years so that schools are not left behind, “said Education Minister Raúl Figueroa.
“The use of technology is key for the future of establishments and to ensure that children and young people do not interrupt their training process. This tool, when used well, can improve the experience of students and facilitate their learning” he added.
Budget increased
This initiative seeks to benefit 99.9% of the enrollment in the system, in addition to expanding the educational use of connectivity within the classroom. In this line, to adhere, the country’s educational establishments must confirm their participation through their supporters and carry out the process during the second semester of this year in online format.
In turn, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Pamela Gidi, indicated that “this project has an important state subsidy, which has a ceiling of $ 13,000 million annually and an increase of 150% compared to the budget that was awarded for the Connectivity initiative for the Education 1.0 ″.
