On Monday, China reported five new cases of coronavirus in Wuhan, the focus of the COVID-19 pandemic, a day after announcing the first infection in more than a month in this central Chinese city.
The metropolis of some 11 million inhabitants, quarantined for more than two months in late January, was greatly affected by the virus, which infected nearly 83,000 people and caused 4,633 deaths in the country, according to official figures.
China on Monday reported a total of 17 new cases of COVID-19, 10 of which are locally-derived infections. It is the second day of a two-digit increase in the number of infections in a day.
Since May 1, they had been kept at less than three a day.
Of these new local cases, five have been registered in the northeast of the country, near Russia and North Korea, raising fears of new outbreaks of contagion.
The city of Shulan, with some 670,000 residents, was quarantined after detecting at least 11 cases over the weekend, according to public CCTV television.
Until now China had slowed the epidemic, according to official figures.
No deaths related to the new coronavirus have been reported in the country for almost a month and economic activity is gradually resuming.
The Shanghai Disneyland theme park reopened on Monday, while authorities gave the go-ahead last week for the reopening of cinemas and sports complexes across the country.
