According to two people who know Apple’s plans, there will be four iPhone 12 models that will have a new design inspired by the classic iPhone 4 – with flat screens surrounded by a flat strip and with angles more pronounced than the iPhone 11.
The design of the iPhone 6 soap is complete. Rumors about the retro design of the iPhone 12 have been circulating since last year, but as they approach the launch, they are reinforced with the advent of more details from the alleged sources and even the image in iOS 14, which seems to confirm this flat design.
Now these two Bloomberg sources seem to confirm that the redesign is indeed complete.
The same sources confirm the leak that John Prosser already published last week: there will be four iPhone 12 models, two basic with different screen sizes and two others – iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, which will have excellent technical specifications.
Also the materials will be different. These two sources confirm that the main iPhone 12 will be made of aluminum – like the iPhone 5 – while the strips of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will be made of stainless steel – like the iPhone 4.
IPhone 12 Design: iPhone 4 or iPad Pro?
The rumor on the screens is also confirmed: iPhone 12 will be released in versions 5.4 – it will be the compact iPhone that many of us have been waiting for, similar in size to the iPhone 5 – and 6.1 inches. The iPhone 12 Pro will have a 6.1-inch screen, and the 6.7-inch XXXL model will be the iPhone 12 Pro Max. All models will have tenderloin less than the current, but will not disappear.
Now the question is whether the design of the new cell phone will be similar to the iPhone 4 or iPad Pro / iPhone 5. According to Prosser, two standard iPhone 12 should be made of aluminum, like the iPhone 5. Model iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone. The 12 Pro Max will have stainless steel bands, just like the original iPhone 4.
It seems strange that there are two different designs, one of which – like the iPad Pro or iPhone 5 – is completely metal, and the other – like the iPhone 4 – with metal straps and a glass back, which once caused concern – as I wrote in this article on the beauty and fragility of the iPhone 4 – but it was surpassed thanks to new materials. All modern iPhone 11s have glass back panels, and no one seems to complain.
In favor of this theory of dual design is a possible differentiation of models, clearly restricting the market for each model – medium and high price category – which justifies the noticeable difference in price between the base and the most advanced models.
The base range will also be easier to manufacture than the iPhone 12 Pro and Max, with an aluminum case. Being easier to mass produce, the iPhone 12 will be cheaper.
High-end production will be more difficult to produce, requiring the same details as the iPhone 11: a beveled glass display and a stainless steel back panel. This is a much more luxurious appearance than the iPhone 5 or iPad Pro, which next to the iPhone 4 seem much more austere or Brutalist,
The presence of two slightly different designs for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will have the disadvantage of having two different production systems, which can affect the economies of scale.
But the reality is that all four models have different dimensions, so economies of scale are not acceptable, except in cases such as a motherboard or Face ID module. But even a camera module would be different. According to rumors, the iPhone 12 will have only three sensors. The iPhone 12 Pro will have three optical sensors and a 3D LiDAR sensor for augmented reality applications.
The advantage of the difference between the base and luxury models clearly outweighs the disadvantage of two different designs.
Finally, the last factor in favor of the design of two glass panels and metal strips is that the iPhone always has a noticeably different aesthetics from the iPad. Apple will have a hard time breaking it branding thanks to the design, the aesthetics of all its devices are exactly the same as those of the iPad Pro. In fact, I believe it is more likely that if the two models are the same, they are more like the iPhone 4 than the iPad Pro.
In any case, CAD models already pass through the underground worlds of rumors. Soon we will have an answer to all these puzzles directly from Chinese factories and 3D programs of ordinary suspects, according to Prosser.
