The Investigation police arrested eight subjects for their alleged responsibility in the millionaire airport robbery that occurred on Monday March 9 this year. They join an individual previously detained, said the chief of the civil police, Héctor Espinosa.
The subjects were apprehended during the night of this Monday, as reported by the Prosecutor’s Office. Four of them were detained in the Metropolitan Region and two in Talca.
Espinosa pointed out that “48 hours after the crime occurred, we had identified several of the gang. What we had to do was position them and have evidence to start a trial. “The leader of the gang, the police chief said, is in custody.
As reported at the time, the loot that this gang of criminals took – formed by a group of between seven and 10 people – was one million euros and $ 14 million.
Espinosa said part of the stolen loot was recovered and firearms seized.
The almost $ 13 billion was stolen from a truck of the Brinks company and came from Bank of America in the United States with the aim – according to sources in the case – of being distributed to different Chilean banks. The assault, according to those who accessed the videos that were analyzed, it took about three minutes.
According to what has been established, the assailants entered the place in two vehicles. One of them pretended to be a car from the DHL parcel company, since it replicated the color and bore the firm’s logo. Hours after the crime, carabineros found the alleged DHL company van in the Cerro Navia commune. It had been burned inside.
Interior Minister Gonzalo Blumel announced today that the government will file a complaint against those responsible for this act. “This is a fact that has caused a high public shock and we hope that the sanctions will be the highest that our legal system contemplates”.
“The fact that these people have been detained, that they are going to face a court and that they are going to assume these responsibilities to the fullest extent of the law, is good news,” added Blumel.
At the hearing, the First Guarantee Court of Santiago accepted the request of the prosecution and extended the detention for the accused. It will resume on Thursday.
