Astronomers “painted” ancient pictures, showing the surface of Jupiter’s moon – Europe. The black-and-white photo of a giant planet’s moon prompted NASA to launch the Galileo camera.
To return to an earlier frame, the researchers decided to better prepare for the upcoming missions to Jupiter and its satellites. We are talking about the Europa Clipper project, which can start from 2023. The device is expected to make at least 45 flybys over Europe, to better understand how the moon’s atmosphere and its icy surface works. Scientists also intend to examine the hypothetical ocean on Jupiter’s moon. According to the results, astronomers are trying to obtain all the important data collected by Galileo. In 1998 it captured the surface of Europe with a width of 460 m. However, the images in that period were in black and white, but the color in this case is extremely important, as it reflects the chemical composition.
In particular, white or blue shades are more levels of pure water ice, while red are other compounds, including salt. The latter, in theory, could occur in the ocean of Europe. It combines old photos with substantial resolution and color, with a little bit of data to get that can help plan the next mission more accurately.
