Netflix has recently released several teen romantic comedies, with very good results. To all the boys I fell in love with, The kisses stand and Sierra Burguess is a loser are some of them.
Most played the same key: an unpopular girl at school who makes the hottest boy fall in love with her. An archi formula known but that continues to work despite the years.
Last week the streaming platform bet on If you knew, Another adolescent romantic comedy, which although it follows the same line, goes a little further.
The tape follows the story of Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis), a hard-working Asian-American student who faces racist bullying from her schoolmates in a small American town.
But Ellie is not a victim, despite everything she manages to create a business writing the essays of other students, money that she uses to pay the basic bills of her home that her depressing father does not take care of.
Things will change when Paul (Daniel Diemer) asks him to write love letters to Aster (Alexxis Lemire), the popular girl with whom he says he is in love. What he doesn’t know is that Ellie likes it too.
This is how Ellie and Paul begin to spend time together and become friends, but as her feelings grow for Aster, his feelings grow for Ellie.
The tape and so far its unknown cast, has a 95% approval on Rotten Tomatoes and has gotten very good reviews from specialists.
“By exploring issues of race and homosexuality with emotional complexity, the film treats teens with the sophistication they deserve,” wrote New York Times’ Kyle Turner.
“She is so cute and transporting, her characters are so nice, you can’t help but want to give the movie and everyone in it a big hug,” added Bilge Ebiri of New York Magazine / Vulture.
“By telling a personal story inspired by elements of her own life, (director Alice) Wu achieves uniqueness and universality. It helps a lot that the actress who is her backup has such a smart and compelling on-screen presence, ”wrote Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com.
The movie that is a teenage adaptation of the story of Cyrano de Bergerac, is currently the third most watched Netflix production in Chile.
