Extreme isolation and total quarantine measures have produced unexpected results in Europe. Mandatory confinement helped reduce covid-19 transmission by 45%.

According to a study carried out by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the reduction in contagion reached 45% from last April 8 to Monday.

The numbers are significantly better than those recorded in the period between April 8 and 23 when the ECDC had announced a decrease of 18%.

The director of the ECDC, Dr. Andrea Ammon, pointed out to the Public Health Commission of the European Parliament that the wave of infections has suffered “a substantial decline” in all the countries of the Old Continent.

Despite the encouraging numbers, Ammon said the main objective remains to limit mortality and control the circulation of the virus in the population, so he considered a strong surveillance strategy.

“People’s expectations of the pandemic, its duration and the effect it will have in the near future must be well managed. This will not end soon and people must mentally prepare for it,” said the doctor.
