The Chinese state television channel CCTV criticized Monday the “crazy and evasive statements” by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the origins of the viral pandemic, fueling the escalation of tensions between the two powers.
Pompeo said Sunday that there is “an enormous amount of evidence” that the new coronavirus originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, where the outbreak in China began.
“There is a tremendous amount of evidence that this is where it started.” Pompeo told ABC, although he did not say if he thought the virus was intentionally released by Beijing.
This conspiracy theory has been repeatedly denied by the World Health Organization (WHO) and numerous experts, but it has carved a path with the support of the US administration of Donald Trump, very critical of the way in which China managed the epidemic after it emerged in late 2019 in Wuhan.
In turn, Trump is being criticized for his management of the pandemic in the United States, where it has already claimed the lives of about 68,000 people, of the 247,000 who have died worldwide.
The CCTV attacked the “harmful Pompeo” who “spits out its venom and spreads lies without reason.”
“These damaging and foolish comments by US politicians allow a greater number of people to understand that these ‘tests’ do not exist,” according to CCTV.
“American politicians are trying to blame others, rig the elections and reprimand China while their own efforts against the epidemic are a disaster,” he added.
Two other comments published this Monday in the People’s Daily, the official organ of the Communist Party, described Pompeo and Steve Bannon, the former strategist of Donald Trump in the White House, as a “lying clown” and Bannon as a “living fossil of the War Cold ”.
Bannon declared last week that China has perpetrated a “biological Chernobyl” against the United States and also cited the Wuhan laboratory theory propagated by the White House.
China and the United States have been waging a dialectical war over the origin of the virus since Chinese Foreign Minister Zhao Lijian accused the US military in March of bringing the virus to China.
Since then, the tone has only increased and both nations are accused of disinformation.
Last week, Trump had also claimed he had proof that the Wuhan lab was the source of the pandemic, although he has not presented it.
