Following the trend of the last few days, today there was again an increase in the number of new cases of people infected by Covid-19, reaching the highest number since the health crisis erupted.
As reported by the Minister of Health, Jaime Mañalich, until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, 985 new cases had been registered with a positive result, which adds up to 17,008 infected nationwide.
Of the total of new cases, 882 people had symptoms and 103 were asymptomatic (this measurement began to be included this week). The increase in infections was attributed by the minister to the increase in PCR tests.
“We are going to look for people in higher risk populations, who, having no symptoms or corresponding to the classification of a suspected case, we do the PCR. So we have a continuous trend of increasing exams and reported cases, ”he said, adding that the number of exams grew by 80% in the past four days. In addition, he reported that there were seven deaths. He added that there are 428 ICU patients, of whom 327 are connected to a mechanical ventilator. To date, 65 people remain in critical condition.
Regarding mechanical fans, the Health Minister noted that there are 612 units available.
Today, in addition, the government received the donation of 117 fans from the Confederation of Production and Commerce (CPC).
President Sebastián Piñera pointed out that “I want to sincerely thank Juan Sutil, the companies, the entrepreneurs, all those who have allowed us to create a fund of more than $ 94 billion.”
In the afternoon, Minister Mañalich, together with the Undersecretary of Assistance Networks, Arturo Zúñiga, traveled to Los Lagos to deliver the new ventilators and protection elements to the personnel of the health network in Puerto Montt and Osorno.
Meanwhile, on Thursday 40 thousand vehicles left Santiago, a situation that was harshly criticized by Minister Mañalich, given the risk of contagion that this implies. “The visit of a man from Santiago to a city has to be frowned upon,” he said, taking as an example the trips for the long weekend to Rancagua and Viña del Mar.
On this issue, Mañalich called for responsible social control.
