Health Minister Jaime Mañalich closed his Twitter account arguing that he received threats. For this reason, the Secretary of State informed through an official letter to the Comptroller General of the Republic: he did it because it was the only possible way to comply with the provisions of the regulatory body, reported on April 6, in which he decreed that Social media accounts that shared official information could not block people.
Mañalich argued that he started blocking users due to threats. But when he was prevented from blocking users, he chose to close the account.
The response to Mañalich also came through an official letter signed by the regional comptroller René Morales, in which the entity reinforced the criteria for the delivery of information through social networks, sliding that, if the personal account is not used to deliver information institutional, it is not necessary to unblock users.
“If the personal account of the administrative authority were not used for the delivery of information obtained in the exercise of his public office in the aforementioned terms, his subjection to the aforementioned rules would not be obligatory,” the statement read, revealed by the newspaper La Tercera.
In this sense, they indicate that “it is appropriate that the delivery of official information and that obtained in the exercise of public office be provided by institutional means.”
Likewise, the Comptroller’s Office states that closing the Twitter account is a “personal” decision of the minister and that if he and his family have been the object of threats, “it is appropriate that they be analyzed in the criminal court by the competent authorities.”
