Those who know him assure that Junior Bórquez (20 years old), born and raised in the popular Nueva Victoria town of Iquique, has always had problems with being overweight; He carries it throughout his short career. He fought against the extra kilos when he came to prove himself to the sub 15 of Iquique as a forward; also when he shone in the South American Sub 17 of 2017, in which he was chosen as the best goalkeeper of the tournament. Until a few days ago, he struggled to keep the Sky Dragons bow.
The apprentice of Claudio Bravo and Manuel Neuer on YouTube stands out for his height, but much more for the good footwork he has. And he has suffered so much with this chimera that even at the end of last season he was about to drop from the celestial first team for being three kilos fatter, that was when he went to the doctor and everything seemed to improve. But no. Through an email questionnaire, the goalkeeper of La Roja Sub 20 agrees to tell the ordeal that he lives after marking positive for furosemide in an anti-doping control that could leave him up to two years out of competition. His defense is already underway.
Can you imagine this situation?
They have explained to me that the sanctions are high. I have seen it in other cases, but I do not want to put myself in that situation, I will show that there was no intention of obtaining any advantage in the medicine I took, which is a diuretic with a prescription. I am confident that the Court of (Experts in) Doping will consider my situation when deciding, not only what I ingested but why I ingested it and how my career and my future job is at risk and also the people who depend on me. Colleagues by profession have told me that the court is severe, but they understand when one takes the record.
Did you take furosemide?
As I said earlier, I took this medication due to a medical problem that I had at the end of December. It was prescribed for me to consume by a doctor.
Didn’t know you were taking it?
I acquired and ingested them because the doctor prescribed it to me at the end of December. On that occasion I informed the doctor that he was a professional soccer player, but did not know about its implications or that it was a prohibited substance. I really didn’t know.
Not informed about what an athlete can and cannot take?
I know that we have an obligation not to ingest anything on our own, but only what the doctors prescribe, to whom we must inform as athletes. All because we can be tested for banned substances, which I did.
Luis Sotomayor, the other Iquique goalkeeper, scored the same substance …
It is not for me to answer that question.
What has it been like to learn of this quarantined situation?
It affected me a lot. I never imagined that this could happen to me. I have always been an athlete who has followed all the rules. I have taken great care of myself during my short career and for the same reason I was very affected by my future, by the club, by the people who have helped me and have always trusted me.
What measures did the club take?
They have fully supported me from the first moment, I have been in the club for years. I am home schooled and they know me, so they know I would never do anything to try to get an extra-sport advantage and they believe my word. From the first day they have been concerned, have contained and advised me. Through the club, lawyers are already handling my defense.
Have you advanced in your defense yet?
They have seen cases of other athletes, we started working since last week. Mainly, we are gathering all the background that allows us to show that there was no intention on my part and that I took this medicine for a problem and prescribed by a doctor that I had at the end of last year, but that was never done to obtain any sporting advantage.
