The president of the Medical College, Izkia Siches, asked the government for consistency after President Sebastián Piñera raised postpone again the constitutional plebiscite from October 25, while the reopening of shopping malls is announced as part of the so-called Safe Return.

The President raised it this Sunday in an interview with CNN, explaining that the economic recession could be “as big” that all countries will have to face problems, and in the case of Chile it would affect the electoral calendar.

Although Siches recalled that from the beginning the union asked that both the dates of the Plebiscite and the elections be open to modifications, “obviously these must maintain coherence vis-à-vis the citizens. It is difficult to explain how you can go to a mall, but not to vote

“It is an issue that must be handled with great caution and we suggest start work now for a safe Plebiscite, which has all the necessary measures to materialize it next October“he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Jaime Mañalich, did not give any option as definitive, since “we cannot anticipate what the situation will be,” although he said he feared a low participation.

“If patients do not go to an emergency department today for fear of contagion by coronavirus, we ask ourselves What is the risk that there will be people who deprive themselves of attending an act of citizen demonstration“he reflected.

The Secretary of State stressed that “these decisions require conversation, consensus, dialogue, and some of them have to be made at the latest in one more month.”

Heraldo Muñoz questions the President’s reasons

For his part, after questioning the Interior Minister for proposing a “rationalization” of the electoral calendar, the PPD president, Heraldo Muñoz, now refuted Piñera’s economic argument.

“It seems extremely serious and delicate to me that the President of the Republic is now adding economic recession to health considerations. I don’t think the presidential elections in the United States will be suspended because of the economic recession, “he said.

Meanwhile, his RN pair, Mario Desbordes, proposed that a new postponement of the Plebiscite be reviewed at the end of July, although he stated that “the sanitary reasons are the only ones that would justify evaluating the date”.
