6.7-degree earthquake is perceived in the regions of Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 degrees was registered at 6:39 p.m. this Sunday in the regions of Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos.

The National Seismological Center located the epicenter 144 kilometers west of Toltén.

The National Emergency Office of the Ministry of the Interior reported that it was a movement of “medium intensity” and that preliminary damage to people, alteration to basic services or infrastructure as a result of the phenomenon are not reported.

For its part, the National Tsunami Alarm System (Snam) of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy issued a bulletin reporting that “the characteristics of the earthquake do not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami off the coast of Chile.”

The mayor of Toltén, Guillermo Martínez, acknowledged being “concerned” by the earthquake, despite the fact that a possible tsunami was ruled out. After 7 pm, he indicated to 24 Hours, that for the moment there would be no record of damage to homes.
