This Wednesday at 10:30 p.m., Chilevisión premiered the Chilean-Finnish series Invisible heroes, starring the national actor Nestor Cantillana and the finnish Pelle Heikkilä.
The production tells the true story of the diplomat Tapani Brotherus (Heikkilä), who came to Santiago de Chile in 1972 to establish an embassy, prior to the coup of September 11, 1973.
The objective of his arrival was to negotiate and sign a commercial agreement with the national government, although this was truncated.
It was he who, after the Military Junta of the Government of Augusto Pinochet overthrew the government of Salvador Allende and took power, saved nearly two thousand Chileans from being detained by the Armed Forces, illegally giving them asylum in his diplomatic residence located in the capital.
This first chapter shows powerful historical images of the country, divided by politics and hit by the economic crisis, shortages and hoarding.
The boy looking for cigars
One of the most powerful scenes occurs when the wife of Brotherus, Shine (Sophia Heikkilä), goes to the center of the capital to buy food and prepare a dinner in which important government politicians would be present.
When you arrive at a market you are met by a long line of buyers waiting to get cigarettes. “What is this for?”, Asks the character to a child who was in the place. “To buy cigarettes”, the minor responds.
“Aren’t you a little too young to smoke?” Shine. The boy replies that his grandmother sent him to buy them, “And then exchange them for fish at the fishmonger.”
Seconds later, the owner of the store appears to announce that he had no merchandise, facing the anger of those who were waiting to purchase the products.
Faced with the child’s uncertainty, Shine He takes out two packs of cigarettes from his wallet and gives them to the child, so that later he can buy food. “Here, good luck with the fish,” he says.
The bombing of La Moneda
In the series, the Finnish embassy was located in front of The coin, on an upper floor, so that two diplomatic workers had a close-up view of the bombing of the government house.
In fact, seconds before the explosive devices fell from the Air Force planes, one of them looks out the window and, after the impact, is affected by the exploding glass.
After that scene, a radio transmission is heard in which Lieutenant Colonel Roberto Guillard announces that they took control of the country.
“Bearing in mind, first, the very serious economic, social and moral crisis …” the military man manages to say.
The two diplomats who were at the Embassy manage to leave the place, but in the street they find military pickets, shots and dust everywhere.
The jump
The Chilean in charge of closing the deal with the Finns was Franco Pavez (Nestor Cantillana), a supporter of the Allende government who, after the coup, began to be persecuted by the military.
That is the reason why the desperate character prowls Brotherus’s residence and decides to jump over a wall to get inside.
“They burned my house (…) who chucha does a huh like this (sic) ”, Pavez asks Brotherus, before which the diplomat asks him to calm down, because in that place “nobody is going to shoot him.”
“I came walking. I came running, the soldiers were shooting outside the Mexican Embassy. Everyone was running, some were jumping over the fence (…) please don’t leave me on the street ”, pleads Pavez.
After the arrival of the character of Cantillana, about twenty more refugees arrive at the house, seeking to escape from authority.
National Stadium
A Finnish citizen married to a Chilean suffers the arrest of her husband, after he was surprised in a supporters meeting of the Allende government.
For that reason, Brotherus helps her find him, reaching the National Stadium, a place where the Armed Forces took the detainees to torture them and obtain information on alleged radical movements.
While the diplomat and the woman walk through the sports complex, he notices that a group of soldiers beat a captured man, so he decides to go to his defense.
It is at that moment that, in a wrong movement, he reaches the seats of the National Stadium, looks around, and note that there are hundreds of prisoners in deplorable condition.
The series will continue on September 16 and 17 at 10:30 p.m. on Chilevisión.
